Indoor ski-slope finally opening within American Dream Mall in October
From Commercial Observer and Daily Voice
The 3.1 million-square-foot American Dream Mall in East Rutherford, NJ, will finally open on 25 October, after being built for 16 years (on and off). This was announced by developer Triple Five.
This project used to be called Xanadu, and had lots of missed openings, three developers, five governors and a major retail contraction, earning lots of sceptics across the state.
This facility will feature an 180,000-square-foot, 800-foot ski slope (of 16 stories high) and an ice-climbing wall. It will also have a ski school area, a chairlift, terrain park, chalet and restaurants.
Snow Operating is involved in this project.
Don Ghermezian, CEO of Triple Five said in a statement “We know that the community has been eagerly awaiting the launch of this incredible global destination. We have a one-of-a-kind property that will reshape the way people think about entertainment, theme parks and shopping.”
Triple Five has missed already some opening days this year. There were plans to open in April, then in the summer and now in the fall.
Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop is not surprised: “We’ve been told this story a gazillion times. I gloss over these days when they’re projected to open”. He criticized the up to USD 390 million in tax breaks being offered to the developer by the state.
Canadian-based Triple Five is also behind the Mall of America and the West Edmonton Mall. It took over the Xanadu Project in 2011 renaming it American Dream Mall. It was in charge of its reconstruction in 2014 with the goal to finish before the Super Bowl XLVII that year, which was played in the adjacent MetLife Stadium. That date was abandoned when Triple Five had trouble nailing down the financing.
Former NJ Gov. Chris Christie called it once the ‘ugliest dam building in New Jersey as it was painted in multi-coloured. Triple Five repainted it in white.
