The Mont Blanc Tunnel will be closed till 16th December

If you are planning to cross the Mont Blanc Tunnel, now it is closed till 16th December. This is part of a yearly plan to work on the tunnel’s maintenance. This year they will be completing the reconstruction of two portions of the tunnel vault of 300 meters each. This is one of the first major European tunnels undertaking deep renovations structural works.

This makes the tunnel being closed from 2nd September at 5 PM till Monday 16th December at 5 PM, just before the Christmas traffic.

It is estimated that most of the heavy traffic will go through the Frèjus tunnel on the A43 motorway, and then going into Torino.

If you are driving by car, you have some options. Until the snowstorms come, you can go through the Petit St Bernard Pass up from Bourg-Saint-Maurice into La Rosière to La Thuille, or take the Grand St Bernard Pass, up from Martigny in Switzerland. You can go to Martigny, if coming from France, driving to the end of the Chamonix Valley into the Col des Montets down to Martigny.

If snowstorm closes the passes, then your option is to take the Grand St Bernard tunnel. It costs EUR 16.50 to get through (cheaper than the Mont Blanc Tunnel, but then it is only 5,8 km against the 11.6 km of the Mont Blanc Tunnel!)

Monte Emilius and Becca di Nonna, a sight you see when you come out of the Valdigne o Valley of the Monte Bianco towards Aosta, if you are then taking the Grand St Bernard tunnel to return to Switzerland and then the UK. You can see this painting in my shop here.

Going towards the east, you have other ways to get into Italy- through the Simplon Pass or Simplon tunnel (boarding a train that takes your car), into  Domodossola and then Lago Maggiore; Chiasso (after doing the Gothard tunnel) into Lago di Como,  and Brennero.

For those having a subscription card for the Mont Blanc Tunnel of 10 or 20 transits, the expiry date automatically is extended by 4 months. If the entire subscription card has not been used as the expiry date approaches, it can be recharged as usual with 10 or 20 transits to keep the remaining transits. Both remaining transits and new ones can therefore be made within 24 months from the day the subscription card was charged, as stated on the Mont Blanc Tunnel website.
